WWW…. Wet West Wales

what to do on rainy days

This may not come as a surprise to some, but it sometimes rains in Wales! It’s what makes the hills and surrounding countryside so lush and picturesque, and after all Tom Jones didn’t sing about ‘The green, green grass of home’ for no reason!

We can all hope for endless sunny days on our holiday, but like any good Girl Guide, or Scout, it’s good to be prepared, just in case!  To help here are our top tips for rainy days.

Rainy days were made for films and popcorn so a trip to the Magic Lantern Cinema in Tywyn is a must. And it’s not any old cinema it’s a piece of cinematic history.  The Magic Lantern has been showing films since 1900 and were showing films 9 years earlier than any other operating Cinema in Britain. The Magic Lantern may have been showing films for 119 years, but today they’re totally state of the art, with an awesome Sony 4K (3D) digital projection system with Dolby 7.1 surround sound.

A visit to the Magic Lantern makes a refreshing change from today’s mass-market multiplexes, with its vintage charm and reasonable ticket prices, you’ll want to go back.

For a fun-filled adventure for the whole family take a trip to King Arthurs Labyrinth.  Journey by boat through the magical veil of an underground waterfall into a mythical world filled with dragons, giants, fierce battles and the legendary King Arthur.

Neighbouring attraction, Corris Mine Explorers, is also a top tip for wet weather. Here you’ll have the rare opportunity to adventure underground into the abandoned and forgotten world of the slate miner.  You’ll experience an authentic Welsh adventure into a mine hand dug by Victorian miners in 1836 that operated for more than 130 years.

King Arthurs Labyrinth and Corris Mine Explorers are just a 15 – 20 minute drive away from Nyth Robin.

For the ultimate fun on a soggy day then take a scenic drive north to Blaenau Ffestiniog. Here you’ll find Bounce Below, the world’s only subterranean playground of its kind, and can trampoline your way through the caves of a disused mine! Make a day of it with an underground Cavern adventure where you’ll fly, climb and traverse your way through the unique course.  Bounce Below and the Caverns are conveniently located in the same place, so you can have double the fun!

After the rain has stopped, then we highly recommend a trip to nearby Dolgoch waterfalls or Devils Bridge Falls near Aberystwyth.  The more rain the better the falls! See… rain is good!
